Dos and Dont’s of Oil Painting

Oil painting allows artists to be as versatile as possible. In the field, experts have created amazing masterpieces. If you wish to learn oil painting, first grasp the basics. During oil painting, the beginners in the field need to keep several things in mind.

Dos:

To accelerate time of drying, you can mix pigments such as lead, manganese, and cobalt, with colours.

If you want to clean away extra layer of oil paint, use alcohol. Alcohol is a powerful solvent that easily remove extra layers from oil paintings.

As you paint, you need to keep palettes that contain oil paints in the same order. This will help you to pick colours easily.

For each successive layer, increase the oil proportion, applying it as ‘fat over lean’. Lower layers absorb oil from upper layers. If the lower layer dries up slower than the upper one, the painting may crack.

Don’ts

Your oil panting should not dry in the dark. This can damage the painting because a thin film of oil can rise over it.

Never use Ivory Black for an under sketching or painting. Ivory Black takes much longer to dry.

Linseed should not be used as a medium in oil paint colours like blue and whites because it has a tendency to turn yellow.
